Ajax extension caused the site to go on a small outage the whole day

Hi

Sorry for the temporary outage of the site. Not sure what the problem was. But the site suddenly started giving some error in the ajax extension used in the site. I never changed the code of the site, but suddenly saw some problem with the Site.

The error was happening only in the server and nothing in the localhost, and Googling did not help anyway. So all I did was upload the bin folder again and things started to work fine again.

New Blog at Weblogs for me

Hi,

Thanks so much to Joe Stagner, for giving me the chance to add my blogs on weblogs.asp.net/Vikram. Yes the new account was created yesterday evening. I will be posting by blogs there also. But don’t worry I will continue to cross post my blogs here also, So if you have subscribed to this blog you will have all the updates regularly.

I decided to use weblogs also for the purpose of visibility. Because of http://www.vikramlakhotia.con being a personal domain, the visibility of the blog has been on the lower side. So to increase the volume of people to my site, I decided rto cross post at weblogs.

A blue professional theme for the site

Hi

After a very long time I am adding a new theme to the site. It’s been long and speaking truly I did stopped to think about adding anymore theme. But then I saw the designer in our group make some template in her free time. I started enjoying one of them. And that was the beginning of the thought for the new theme.

Completing one year of blogging with 200 blogs

Hi,

Guess what, I have Completed a year in blogging....and what better reminder than my Service provider asking me to renew my domain registration which actually means to pay my bills!! So it's a year in the blogging world. When I look back at the last year I see myself starting the blog with a very simple theme, adding 4 more theme to the site. Starting with a plain Site and adding lots of Ajax functionality to the site. I had some non technical blogs also but overall the blogs were directly or indirectly related to Dot Net, Asp.Net and SQL Server.

There are a total of 200 post in the last year(I targeted the same for a year time frame). This is my 201th post. In the Mean time I have also started a small fun site were I blog about the fun stuff (Jokes, Information etc...).

I am back again after that horrible time

Hi,

Yes the nightmare is over. Yes My site is back Live. Yes there is not more of that "Site not available" message. And more importantly Yes I am keen on continuing it ahead.

It was a simple nightmarish time for me. First the site went down because of the over usage. Then the server had some problem getting it back. Then they gave me a new server for the site. By then My PC crashed. Yes the motherboard crashed. (And not to forget near flood situation because of the rain in Kolkata during this period.) I could not do anything till the PC was back up. Then the hosting provider had a big confusion on the change of DNS. I know it is becoming very long. But that’s what has been the story of the nightmare

New emerging technology from Microsoft Photosynth

Hi

Photosynth is an amazing new technology from Microsoft Live Labs that will change forever the way you think about digital photos.

With Photosynth we can walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle. Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it's mega pixels or gigapixels in size. See where pictures were taken in relation to one another. Find similar photos to the one you're currently viewing. Send a collection - or a particular view of one - to a friend.

Have a look yourself

Apple brings out a browser for Windows

Hi

So the browser war is really heating up. Till now we had to worry only about IE 6(Many people still uses this), IE 7, Fire fox, and Opera on windows. Now there is a addition. Apple has come up with a version of safari for windows.

So this means we need to test the web application in one more browser. I am very sure that there will be many differences in the safari in MAC and safari in windows. So if you are thinking that testing in one of the safari browser (either MAC or windows) will work for both, than you might be up for a toss. I have already heard of a few mismatch between safari in the two operating system.

But whatever happens this promises more fun in the browser war, and most probably some very good new invention in the browser. After all there are 3 people fighting for the same space.

Thanks

Some small changes made to the site for your usability

Hi

Of late I have done small changes to the site. I found there are some things missing for the user, so tried to make some very small changes in the system. One of the important things that I was very eager to do was to allow user to attach to site with the help of RSS and Atom feed.

Megabyte, Gigabyte, Terabyte, Petabyte, Exabyte, Zettabyte, Yottabyte

Hi,

Yesterday I faced a very strange question from Sadhan. What he wanted to know was what is the extent of unit for memory that has already been defined. What comes after we are finished with gigabytes and tera bytes.

This instantly caught my attention and after googling I found the answer. So I decided to put down a small blog on it. Here is the list of the Unit for the least to the top

A new blog JUST-LIKE-THAT

Hi

I have recently also started a new website (A sub domain http://JustLikeThat.Vikramlakhotia.com). This is also a blogging Site but using the wordpress software Implementation.

I know first question on your mind will be why another blogging site and that too with another software and not the custom blogging software that I have made myself. Well the answer is both simple and difficult to explain.

First of all let me tell you what the blogging site is about. The new blogging site will not feature anything related to Programming, Dot Net, SQL Server etc. Its going to be fun, information sports, music, video’s etc.

Happy New Year to all of you

Hi

The last year was a wonderful year for me. I started blogging on the site in august and its been 4 and a half month and the blog seems to be going bigger and bigger everyday.

In the beginning, the traffic was pretty low, but it has gone up with time, people have started giving their comments on the various posts. But (surprisingly for me) many people have been mailing me with their problem and appreciative comments.

It’s been great to answer those and understand different types of problem that can come up. Also this has helped me a lot in learning a lot of new stuff.

Just for statistics, the site has now got 110 posts in various categories and 75 comments on them.

Some of the most popular blogs have been

Giving the site a new Identity by giving a new Icon

Hi

After quite a few days I have added anew feature to the Site. A favicon for the Website. The Icon gives an Identity to the site. A favicon is that little icon beside a URL in the address bar of your browser.

You can already see the in the Title and address bar. It was fairly simple. Create an .ICO file. The ico file will be the icon. Add a small code to the header of the site. As I am using the Master page this was fairly easy. All I had to do was add a tag in the HEAD section of the master page.

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="iconName.ico">

The size of the icon should be 16 * 16 and should be saved (you should be keeping the icon file) in the root of the application.

He Icon also works with IE7 ad Firefox. Hence no problem with different browser also

what went wrong with my site???

Hi

Finally it's over!! The last 16 hrs had been no less than a nightmare for me. Last night, as I was wrapping up my day on a positive note with one new theme almost ready to be uploaded, I realized that my site was not available online. Immediately called up the so-called 24x7 customer service of my providers. No response from them which came as a shocker to me, for they had promised me tech support round the clock.

I guess its true promises are made to be broken. Anyway, my sleep was ruined, and the night passed with me tossing on my bed. My day began with me constantly calling up these useless people and finally they did respond to me.

Adding the clustrMaps to the site so that people can see form where and how many the people are comming and viewing the blog

Hi

After a few days I have added a new feature to the site. My friend (Farghana) talked to me about this nice utility tool about showing the number of visitors coming to your site and from where they are coming. I have used the ClustrMaps.

Adding it to the site is very easy. You have to register to this site and then they will give you the HTML code that needs to be added. They give you three type of html code, Standard, for people with restriction in Hosting and w3c XHTML 1.1 validated.

Its good to show everyone how many people are coming to the site and where they are coming from

Hope this helps
Thanks

Added another theme to the site using ASP.NET 2.0 Themes
Hi,

So a new week started and with it I added a new theme, which I find really cool. And once again I have to thank Farghana, (despite the faces she makes at me and hitting me with pen, paper or whatever is at hand, ok I forgive you farghana, for you know not what you are doing! ) for such a beautiful creation. Named it Green Atlas.

Suggestions for any other name are welcome!

Thanks
Vikram

Nw Themes using ASP.NET Themes
Hi

I have added a new theme to the site(Thanks to Farghana again). The new theme is called graphics. Th interesting thing for me was that all I had to do to add the theme was add 2 line of codes in which I set the correct Theme selected in the page load(May be I should have used radiobuttonlist) and 2 lines of code to select the new theme thanks to ASP.NET 2.0.
